The 80m long steel freighter St George has been scuttled as an artificial reef in the national park in early 1999. Situated on the south east coast a short boat journey from the port of Bayahibe, the freighter is placed upright in 30-40m depth and is memorable for the diversity of marine life. You descend through a cloud of jacks swirling all around you then the wreck looms out of the blue. The wreck is easily accessed if the shot line is anchored to the stern.

CARNET DE PLONGÉE - Normand – La Romana - Saona Island

Troisième journée de  plongée / Third day of diving
ScubaFun Dive center: John C.

The island was baptized "Saona" by Christopher Columbus, who discovered it in May 1494 during his second voyage to the Americas. The name was meant "... to honor Michele da Cuneo, [Columbus'] friend from Savona."[1] Columbus named Michele da Cuneo the first governor of the island.[2]
Saona Island and Savona (now part of Liguria, northern Italy) still have twinning relationships. The small powerplant in Saona Island is a gift of Savona.

Note: the island of Hispaniola today comprises two states, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The Spanish 'conquest' of Hispaniola was a rather single-sided affair; there was no organized resistance, the Tainos on repeated occasions willing to negotiate and cooperate with the Spaniards.

     --------------------------------------------

Cenotes are formed by dissolution of rock and the resulting subsurface void, which may or may not be linked to an active cave system, and the subsequent structural collapse of the rock ceiling above the void. The rock that falls into the water below will then be slowly removed by further dissolution, creating
space for more collapse blocks. The rate of collapse increases during periods when the water table is below the ceiling of the void, since the rock ceiling is no longer buoyantly supported by the water in the void. Cenotes may be fully collapsed creating an open water pool, or partially collapsed with some portion of a rock overhang above the water. The stereotypical cenotes often resemble small circular ponds, measuring some tens of meters in diameter with sheer drops at the edges. Most cenotes, however, require some degree of stooping if not crawling to access the water. In the north and north-west of the Yucatan Peninsula, the cenotes generally overlie vertically extensive voids penetrating 50 to 100 m (160 to 330 ft) below the modern water table. However, very few of these cenotes appear to be connected with horizontally extensive underground river systems, with water flow through them being more likely dominated by aquifer matrix and fracture flows.[4] In contrast, the cenotes along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula (within the state of Quintana Roo) often provide access to extensive underwater cave systems, such as Ox Bel Ha, Sac Actun/Nohoch Nah Chich and Dos Ojos.

Dans le fleuve Saint Laurent à Rockport, Ontario

Kinghorn

This square barge lies on a slope near shore.
There are two ways to dive this site. The easiest way is to using the mooring line that is in roughly 75' of water just above the barge. Descend the mooring line and following the yellow line from the mooring block down to the wreck.
The other way to dive this wreck is to enter upstream and drift onto it. From the upstream entry point, drift along for 12-14 minutes at whatever depth you like and then descend to 80'-115'. From there you will come across the mooring block, the yellow line leading from the mooring block and down to the wreck, or the wreck itself. This is the method most people prefer since there is not that much to see or do on the barge itself.

09 octobre 2010 - Brockville Ontario - Muscallonge
